Position Description

Cedar Classical Academy seeks a full-time Athletic Director and Athletic Lead Teacher who loves physical education. The Athletic Director will oversee every facet of the Academy’s operation that directly impacts physical education. Through physical education classes and the development of a future athletic program, the Athletic Director will build a school-wide athletic culture that serves the mission of the school. The Athletic Director reports to the Head of School.

This position includes twice/weekly instruction of multiple sections of physical education classes from 1st grade to 10th grade. The Academy desires that the development of any future athletic program be rooted in the self-discipline training which shapes the pre-established physical education curriculum and pedagogy in the younger grades.

The Athletic Director will work closely with the Head of School and senior staff to develop and plan for the future launch of an athletic program consistent with the Academy’s educational mission and driving purpose for athletics. This may include developing and managing the fiscal operating budgets for athletic activities; representing the school in a first-class manner at athletic contests and association or league meetings; recruiting and recommending volunteers, officials, and staff; establishing, setting, and assessing goals for the athletic programs consistent with the Academy’s strategic plan, mission, and vision; developing principles of coaching and competitiveness consistent with the Academy’s portrait of a teacher and portrait of a graduate; planning and leading sports activities outside of normal school hours; developing and supporting programs that contribute to the overall student body wellness (body, mind, and soul); working closely with the Head of School in regards to academic policies such as practice and contest scheduling, use of athletic facilities, excused athletic absences, etc. The Athletic Director will represent and vigorously enforce the Academy’s code of conduct. The Athletic Director will attend all staff meetings. The Athletic Director will enthusiastically attend all school events outside of normal school hours.

The Athletic Director will teach at such times and places and in such a manner as may be directed by the Head of School. To complete this full-time position for the 2023-2024 academic year, the Athletic Director will likely teach an additional 3-5 daily sections.

This position is largely active. The Athletic Director will wear an athletic uniform when teaching physical education classes, and will provide examples for and participate in the exercises. This will include regular running and calisthenics within the school day.

In addition to these specific duties, it is expected that the Athletic Director will model the Christian faith to students and as a representative of the school’s mission. The Athletic Director is expected to address poor behavior in their students in the hallways when it is observed and to regularly incorporate Christian themes in their classes and in conversation with parents, staff, and students, such as the Gospel, forgiveness, virtue, and redemption. The Athletic Director is expected to pray with and for students on a regular basis.

This position is a full-time, salaried position with a start date of July 1. Prior to the start date, the Athletic Director will attend the ACCS Conference June 22-24 in Pittsburgh, PA with the rest of the staff. Teacher training is provided on campus during the second week of August. Teacher mentorship from the Head of School and the Dean of Lower School Faculty will be provided throughout the year.

The Athletic Director will have a bachelor’s degree and prior athletic experience.
