Teaching Latin at any level:
Classroom techniques and wisdom for novice and practiced Latin teachers
Would you like to improve your Latin classroom skills in just one day? Join experts from the ACCS Institute for Classical Languages and elsewhere for a day of instruction in teaching Latin.
Pre-conference | Wednesday, June 24 | 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Practicums are offered in-person only.
Latin classes tend to split into two groups: the strong and the weak. The classic dilemma for Latin teachers is whether to go fast and lose the weak, or slow down and lose the strong. This year’s Latin practicum will focus on strategies and exercises that keep all your students engaged, all while employing a solid middle methodology: a mixture of listening, reading, writing, speaking and grammatical theory.
As always, ICL practicum participants learn from principles and practice consistent with the most successful classical educators of the past; this year, however, they will focus on how to solve some of the most common practical problems of the Latin classroom in our time:
1) how to use multiple learning pathways and methodological tools to a larger range of students,
2) how to set up group exercises and peer-to-peer interaction to help every student grow,
3) how to craft assignments that challenge the top but do not drown the bottom,
4) how to employ classroom tools and arrangements to keep the bottom of the class from falling behind, and
5) how to teach multiple skill levels simultaneously in one classroom
The Institute for Classical Languages (ICL) exists for one purpose: to help teachers and schools teach Classical Languages with greater success. The ICL Latin Practicum is designed for teachers and administrators at every level of skill in Latin. We do this by organizing participants into multiple skill-based tables, so every participant will be with those of similar skill and working on exercises that match their own skill level. No matter their skill level coming in, all participants will learn or practice powerful techniques useful for teaching Latin in their own schools.
