Elemental Meaning

Teaching Euclid Dialectically

Plato’s Academy famously forbade entry to any who had not “mastered geometry.” Euclid’s Elements is still the “key” that opens the quadrivium to our Rhetoric-level students. This workshop explores the patterns of deeper meaning in Books I and III, while demonstrating methods for approaching the three fundamental aspects of ancient Geometry: axiomata, construction, and demonstration. Participants will learn to move beyond “rote learning” in geometry, explore ways to integrate the trivium with Euclid, and how to vivify this challneging text for modern learners.
