Position Description

Franklin Classical School, an ACCS member school, is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time position as a classroom teacher at the grammar stage. An applicant must be a mature Christian, have a college degree, possess knowledge of classical education, and be eager to invest in the lives of students. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching in a classical, Christian setting.

Located in historic and beautiful Franklin, Tennessee, FCS is in its 33rd year, offering a classical, Christian education for kindergarten through 12th grade. We recently purchased our own building with 66,000 square feet of space and a .5 million dollar custom playground. More importantly, we offer a dynamic and thriving Christian community for teaching, learning, and living life together.

The following job description is not intended to enumerate every possible responsibility a grammar school teacher will fulfill in a school year.

Scope of Position:

• Each grammar teacher is responsible for general administrative duties as assigned, supervision of students, the planning/preparing/implementing of daily activities, monitoring children’s progress, communicating to parents, and calculating grades.

• A grammar teacher is to promote Franklin Classical’s Christian mission, vision, and educational philosophy as well as abide by the FCS Honor Code and Faculty Handbook. Grammar teachers report to both the Grammar Head and Academic Dean.

Responsibilities:

• Grammar teachers shall utilize school curriculum to create developmentally appropriate learning activities that reflect a Christian worldview as well as work together with the Grammar team to foster an atmosphere of collaboration, open communication, and teamwork.

• Grammar teachers are responsible for all duties related to their class as assigned by the Academic Dean or Grammar Department Head. Grammar teachers are responsible for knowing and following current FCS policies and procedures. The primary responsibility of the teacher is to disciple children in the Christian faith while teaching academic disciplines and character development.

• Be ready to greet students by 7:30 in the morning and stay until the completion of daily duties.

Specific Duties:

• Assist in planning and attending Knight Camp, Knight Crew, field trips, and special events.

• Attend and engage in weekly staff meetings and biannual Parent/Teacher conferences.

• Attend and engage in ongoing professional development to improve personal and professional skills.

• Communicate with families regularly through a weekly newsletter.

• Schedule and coordinate quarterly field trips.

• Compile a yearly student supply list.

• Create a weekly schedule of subjects taught.

• Submit supply lists, field trip forms, weekly schedule, and yearly plan to the Grammar Department Head and Academic Dean for review each summer.

• Administer and grade proficiency tests for candidates for FCS admission. Deliver proficiency tests to the Grammar Department Head for review.

• Write character blessings for students’ year-end blessing chapel.

Supervision:

• Monitor and supervise daily activities of class and aide.

• Address any special problems or situations involving curriculum, staff, families, or children. If issues or questions persist, report to the Grammar Department Head for clarity and assistance.

• Support the professional growth of colleagues by sharing materials and information and providing helpful feedback and encouragement.

• Provide feedback to aide. This feedback will also be shared with the Grammar Department Head for incorporation into job performance evaluations.

Classroom Environment:

• Use and promote positive guidance techniques.

• Communicate with children on their developmental level.

• Establish routines with smooth transition periods.

• Encourage children to work independently when appropriate.

• Design appropriate room arrangement to support goals of the program.

• Maintain a safe and healthy environment and notify the administration of maintenance issues.

• Maintain classroom inventory and submit requests for needed classroom items or purchases.

Curriculum:

• Develop a Year Plan listing content and skills that will be taught each week.

• Provide a balance between child‐initiated and teacher‐initiated activities.

• Provide a developmentally appropriate and integrated curriculum that meets the needs of individual children.

Assessment:

• Assess students’ needs and developmental progress on an on‐going basis.

• Conduct formal and informal observations and assessments.

• Use assessments to plan curriculum.

• Meet with individual parents as required on matters involving child or FCS policies.
