Position Description
Summit Classical Academy, a Christ-centered institution dedicated to the classical tradition, seeks a passionate and qualified Upper School Literature/History Teacher to join our faculty for the 2025-2026 school year. The ideal candidate will inspire students to explore the great works of literature and the pivotal events of history, revealing God’s providence and truth through a classical Christian lens, while cultivating their skills in analysis, discussion, and articulate expression. This position involves teaching a range of literature and history courses to students in middle and high school (grades 6-12), integrating the two disciplines to deepen students’ understanding of humanity’s story and their place within it.

Responsibilities:
- Teach middle and high school students in literature and history courses (e.g., Western Civilization, American History, British Literature, World Literature), employing classical pedagogy and a biblical worldview.
- Foster a love for reading, writing, and historical inquiry through Socratic discussions, close textual analysis, and narrative teaching.
- Integrate literature and history to highlight their interconnectedness, drawing out timeless truths and their relevance to a Christian life.
- Design and implement engaging lesson plans that align with the school’s classical Christian curriculum and mission.
- Assess student progress through various methods (e.g., essays, oral presentations, exams) to monitor academic growth and encourage intellectual rigor.
- Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and school events to support our community and mission.
- Collaborate with colleagues to enhance the educational experience across disciplines.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Literature, History, Humanities, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred but not required).
- Experience teaching middle and/or high school students, ideally in a classical or Christian educational setting.
- Strong understanding of classical pedagogy (e.g., the trivium’s logic and rhetoric stages) or a willingness to learn and apply it.
- Deep commitment to faith in Jesus Christ and the integration of biblical principles into teaching.
- Must possess or be willing to obtain teaching certification from the Association of Classical Christian Schools (ACCS).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a heart for mentoring students and partnering with parents.
Preferred Skills:
- Familiarity with the Great Books tradition and key historical texts (e.g., Homer, Shakespeare, Augustine, the Founding Fathers’ writings).
- Experience leading Socratic discussions and teaching students to craft compelling arguments in speech and writing.
- A love for storytelling and an ability to connect historical events and literary works to students’ lives.
- Ability to teach other subjects if needed (e.g., grammar).
