1st Grade Assistant Teacher

Immanuel Lutheran School

Alexandria, Virginia 22301

Position Description

ILS is a classical, Christian school serving grades Jr. K–8.  We endeavor to teach children the True, the Good, and the Beautiful.  As a classical school, we draw on the understanding of the three stages of learning—grammar, logic, and rhetoric—to help children build a base of knowledge, learn to ask critical questions, and build cogent arguments.  Divided into a Lower School (grades Jr.K–4) and an Upper School (grades 5–8), Immanuel offers a joyful team environment where teachers are excited to share a love of Christ and a thirst for knowledge with their students every day of the school year.

The position will include but not be limited to the following responsibilities:
·         Help students stay on task and help them when struggling with handwriting and math.

·         Always redirect students when needed.

·         Model truth, love, honor, faithfulness, and excellence.

·         Putting papers in red folders and folders in backpacks.

·         Take children to the restroom when needed.

·         Clean desks, sweep and put up chairs at the end of each day.

·         Help special teachers with music and art.

·         Step in to teach when the head teacher is pulled away.

·         Be a team player.

·         May be asked to sub in other positions when needed.

·         Will sub when head teacher is gone.

·         Make copies of lessons.

·         Sharpen pencils and colored pencils.

·         Help handout needed math tools.

·         Collaborate with the teacher on student observations.

Overall, the first grade assistant teacher will be responsible for supporting and occasionally substituting or otherwise leading classes for the first grade head teacher. The students’ ages range from 6 to 7. ILS provides new teacher training along with health and security training for all new faculty members.

Applicants should have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and should be committed Christians.  More information about Immanuel Lutheran Church and School can be found at immanuelalexandria.org.  Applicants should send a cover letter and CV to [email protected].
