Position Description

Second Baptist School University-Model (SBSUM) is seeking PART-TIME MUSIC TEACHERS at the Cypress campus for the 2024-2025 school year.

  • Position Title:  Music Teacher
  • Location: Cypress Campus
  • Reports To:  Dean of Fine Arts
  • Work Calendar:  Ten Months (September – May, with training dates in August)

JOB SUMMARY.    

A SBSUM music teacher must be able to plan, organize and implement an appropriate instructional program in primary and secondary classrooms that guide and encourage students to develop and fulfill their academic and musical potential. In addition to teaching, this role will be responsible for the direction of, and assistance with, the school choirs, fall/spring showcases, and the spring musical. Teacher work is performed under the dean of fine arts and the dean of campus.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED.

To perform this job successfully, candidates must:

  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Report to work on a regular and punctual basis.
  • Meet professional teacher education requirements of SBSUM.
  • Be able to read music fluently (proficiency in piano is preferred.)
  • Have proficiency in choral direction and assessment.
  • Have experience teaching music and as a performer.
  • Be willing to help pioneer an orchestra/band program.
  • Stay up to date with, and be willing to learn, new technologies.
  • Perform other related work to accomplish the objectives of the total school program.

CANDIDATE SUMMARY.

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution; a master’s degree in education, music or related field is preferred.

  • State and/or classical teaching certification.

CLASSICAL CLASSROOM TEACHER JOB SUMMARY.

Essential functions of the job include but are not limited to the following:

  • Have a passion for learning and commitment to classical instruction.
  • Understand the classical trivium and progymnasmata.
  • Prepare and/or deliver lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning.
  • Develop schemes of work, lesson plans and tests in accordance with long range plans.
  • Demonstrate a mastery of the subject material assigned.
  • Communicate clearly to, and work closely with, parents to resolve any behavior issues.
  • Manage student behavior in the classroom and maintain biblical discipline standards in accordance with the rules and disciplinary systems of SBSUM.
  • Teach classes as assigned following the prescribed scope and sequence as scheduled.
  • Update all necessary records (lesson plans, LRPs, etc.) accurately and completely as required by school administration.
  • Observe and evaluate student performance and development to provide appropriate feedback.
  • Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities to students, colleagues and parents.
  • Assign and grade classwork, homework, tests and assignments.
  • Prepare weekly assignments for satellite classroom time.
  • Obtain information for parents when requested, promptly return phone calls and answer emails.
  • Stay current on best practices in classical education in order to promote educational excellence.
  • Participate in appropriate professional activities.
  • Comply with all SBSUM, Second Baptist School and Second Baptist Church policies and procedures.
  • Attend all required meetings/training: parent conferences, faculty meetings, devotions, school functions and training, as well as other scheduled events.
  • Supervise co-curricular activities, organizations, and outings as assigned.

Ideal candidates should possess exceptional musical proficiency and have at least three years of teaching experience.

An advanced degree, university-model and/or classical teaching experience, and prior knowledge of Second Baptist Church and School are all considered a plus.
