Position Description

Summit Classical Academy, an ACCS-accredited, Christ-centered classical school, is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Latin Teacher for the 2026–2027 school year. The ideal candidate will guide students in mastering the Latin language across middle and upper school levels, building strong grammatical foundations, vocabulary, reading, and translation skills while cultivating an appreciation for Latin’s role in Western civilization, classical literature, and Christian heritage. This position will involve teaching 6th grade Latin (using Latin for Children Primer B) as well as upper school Latin I (using Latin Alive! Book 1) and Latin II (using Latin Alive! Book 2) for grades 7–12, employing classical pedagogy to develop logical reasoning, linguistic precision, and a biblical worldview.

Responsibilities

  • Teach 6th grade Latin using the Latin for Children Primer B curriculum, focusing on engaging, age-appropriate grammar, vocabulary, chants, derivatives, and introductory reading to build enthusiasm and foundational skills.
  • Teach upper school Latin I and Latin II courses, implementing the Latin Alive! curriculum to advance grammar, syntax, translation of adapted texts, and composition exercises.
  • Use classical methods such as memorization, parsing, oral recitation, and discussion to connect Latin to English language development, history, literature, and Scripture.
  • Integrate Latin study with the broader classical Christian curriculum, highlighting its influence on the Great Books tradition and theological writings.
  • Design lesson plans aligned with SCA’s trivium-based approach, emphasizing the grammar stage in 6th grade and progressing to logic/rhetoric stages in upper school.
  • Assess student progress through quizzes, tests, translations, recitations, projects, and oral work to ensure mastery and confidence.
  • Mentor students in applying Latin skills to critical thinking, rhetorical expression, and interdisciplinary connections.
  • Collaborate with faculty on cross-curricular integration (e.g., Latin in theology, history, or literature) and participate in school events.
  • Contribute to faculty professional development and community activities to support SCA’s mission.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Latin, Classics, Education, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Experience teaching Latin at the middle and/or high school level, preferably in a classical or Christian setting.
  • Deep personal faith in Jesus Christ and enthusiastic agreement with SCA’s Statement of Faith.
  • Strong understanding of classical pedagogy and the trivium, or a willingness to learn and apply it.
  • Ability (or willingness to obtain) ACCS teacher certification.
  • Excellent communication skills and a passion for inspiring students in classical languages.

Preferred Additional Strengths

  • Familiarity with or experience teaching the Latin for Children curriculum (especially Primer B) and Latin Alive! series (Classical Academic Press).
  • Proficiency in Latin grammar, reading, and translation, with ability to guide students from introductory to intermediate levels.
  • Experience preparing students for the National Latin Exam or progression to advanced classical studies.
  • Interest in leading Latin clubs, recitation events, spoken Latin activities, or integrating Latin with Great Books discussions.
