Middle School Language Arts Teacher

Position Description

Responsibilities

• Teach language arts courses, facilitating close reading, Socratic discussions, and rhetorical exercises.
• Integrate literature with Scripture to explore themes of redemption, virtue, and human nature.
• Craft lessons focused on grammar, composition, poetry, and novels aligned with SCA’s curriculum, including implementation of the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) approach for structured writing and grammar instruction.
• Assess progress via essays, speeches, creative writing, and critiques.
• Mentor students in rhetoric, helping them express ideas with clarity and conviction.
• Collaborate on cross-subject projects, such as literature-history ties or debate teams.
• Contribute to professional growth and community events.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in English, Literature, or related (Master’s preferred).
• Teaching experience in upper school language arts, ideally classical Christian.
• Committed faith in Jesus Christ and accord with SCA’s Statement of Faith.
• Expertise in classical pedagogy, especially rhetoric.
• Willingness to obtain ACCS teacher certification.
• Strong skills in writing and public speaking.

Preferred Additional Strengths

• Experience with the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) curriculum for grammar and composition.
• Familiarity with Great Books tradition (e.g., Shakespeare, Austen, Dickens).
• Experience with dual-enrollment English courses.
• Enthusiasm for drama, writing clubs, or literary societies.
