Head of Lower School Job Description

The Head of Lower School (HLS) job is integral to fulfilling Veritas’ mission. First and foremost, the HLS ministers and demonstrates Christ-like character and care for Veritas’ students, staff, families, and community. Second, the HLS ensures that the mission is being communicated and enacted in all lower school classrooms and activities.

Full time salaried position with pay dependent on experience

Personal and Professional Qualities

● Credible profession of repentance and faith in Christ

● Member or regular attendee of a local church

● Friendly, welcoming, and professional presence

● Willingness and desire to serve others

● Demonstrated ability to shepherd and mentor others

● Has administrative and teaching experience

● Has a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree preferred

● Demonstrate a knowledge and commitment to classical Christian education ● Discretion and discernment, able to keep sensitive information confidential ● Emotionally flexible; has a willingness to adapt and approaches growth positively ● Is sociable; motivated by interacting with people and comfortable with initiating conversation and culture

● Buys in and helps to shape a Christ-centered discipleship minded culture among families, staff, and students

● Understands how to carry out and implement classical Christian education in the lower school, while understanding how it fits together in the upper school as well ● Understands and demonstrates essential elements of sound teaching practice including the Seven Laws, Bloom’s Taxonomy, and The Four Foundations

● Tracks trends and changes in education, culture, and parent education opportunities ● Willingness to take on “other duties” as assigned

Reporting Relationships

● The Head of Lower School will report directly to the Head of School

● All other lower school personnel report to the Head of Lower School

● Oversees and coordinates all lower school aides (PE, recess, lunch duty, etc.)

Head of Lower School Responsibilities

● Collaborative (with Academic Dean – sole responsibility if no A.D. position) ○ Works with the Head of School and the Academic Dean to ensure the mission is being executed in the upper school.

○ Works closely with the Academic Dean to ensure training, collaboration, mentoring, and support for all lower school faculty and staff

○ Conducts evaluative observations and supervision of lower school teachers along with the Academic Dean

○ Coordinates development and implementation of curriculum with the Academic Dean

○ Oversees the lower school aids for smooth coverage of lower school activities ○ Oversees and coordinates, with the Director of Admissions, the parent partnership program

● Administrative

○ Is responsible to communicate all lower school information to the Operations Manager and Nota Bene.

○ Develops the lower school class and supervision schedule (PE, recess, art, etc.) ○ Build and oversees a lower school academic support and success program ○ Organizes and implements in-service planning and staff development ○ Helps update staff and parent manuals

○ Organizes and oversees elementary programs (assemblies, competitions, liturgy, etc)

○ Oversees elementary student and staff records, making sure a copy is also kept in personnel

● Faculty and Staff

○ Conducts hiring, supervision, and dismissal of all elementary personnel ○ Oversees the maintenance and implementation of lower school faculty culture, including mentoring and encouraging both professional and personal growth. ○ Works with lower school teachers to establish clear goals and growth objectives for the school year

○ Organize and oversee (assign or personally carry out) a faculty initiative growth plan for culture, community, collaboration, etc.

○ Demonstrate our mission through excellent and biblical relational standards ○ Communicate effectively regarding our mission, both orally and in writing ● Students

○ Conducts, with H.O.S. or Director of Admissions, family and student interviews ○ Oversees student discipline and growth in wisdom, virtue, and godliness as well as growth towards the Portrait of a Graduate

○ Creates and oversees a plan for lower school students discipleship along with the Head of School

○ Oversees the maintenance and implementation of lower school student culture, including mentoring and encouraging both professional and personal growth ● Teaching

○ Willingness to teach classes in area of expertise, and develop new expertise
