Position Overview
Providence Christian School is seeking a skilled, energetic, and mission-aligned Director of Bands for 5th–12th grade to lead and develop a comprehensive instrumental music program within the school’s Classical Christian educational model.

The Director of Bands will provide musical, instructional, and spiritual leadership for the band program, developing students in musicianship, discipline, ensemble responsibility, and a love for music that is good, true, and beautiful.

The successful candidate should be both an accomplished musician and an excellent teacher who understands that music education is not merely preparation for performances, but an important means of forming students’ affections, habits, character, and capacity for faithful service.

The Director of Bands will work closely with the Director of Fine & Performing Arts to build a coherent and sequential instrumental music program that develops students from beginning musicianship through advanced ensemble performance.

Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership: Direct and develop all aspects of the Providence band program for grades 5–12, establishing a coherent sequence of instruction, repertoire, performance expectations, and musical development across grade and experience levels.

Classical Christian Formation: Teach music within a distinctly Christian worldview, helping students recognize and pursue the good, the true, and the beautiful through disciplined musical study and performance.

Musicianship: Develop students in music literacy, tone production, technique, rhythm, intonation, listening, ensemble skills, musical expression, and independent musicianship.

Ensemble Direction: Rehearse and conduct concert bands and other instrumental ensembles assigned by the Director of Fine & Performing Arts. This includes courses during the school day and after-school duties and rehearsals associated with the program.

Marching Band: Lead and develop the marching band program, including rehearsals, football games, competitions, and other school or community appearances.

Repertoire Selection: Select high-quality repertoire appropriate to students’ developmental levels while exposing them to excellent works from the breadth of the musical and instrumental tradition.

Student Formation: Establish a rehearsal culture characterized by discipline, humility, attentiveness, perseverance, fortitude, mutual responsibility, and excellence.

Spiritual Leadership: Serve as a mature Christian role model and appropriately incorporate prayer, Scripture, hymnody, and Christian formation into the life of the program.

Recruitment and Retention: Actively recruit students into instrumental music and cultivate a program in which students desire to continue developing as musicians from year to year.

Performances and Events: Prepare students for concerts, school events, athletic performances, festivals, competitions, solo and ensemble opportunities, and other appropriate performances.

Program Administration: Maintain accurate rosters, calendars, inventories, instrument assignments, music libraries, equipment records, and communication with students and families.

Instrument and Equipment Stewardship: Oversee the maintenance, organization, acquisition, and responsible stewardship of school-owned instruments, uniforms, music, and equipment.

Parent and Community Engagement: Communicate clearly and professionally with families and cultivate healthy parent involvement in support of the band program while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries and responsibilities.

Department Collaboration: Work collaboratively with the Director of Fine & Performing Arts and other Fine Arts faculty to advance a unified departmental vision and support school-wide Fine Arts events.

Qualifications & Requirements
Faith Alignment: A committed Christian who is actively involved in a Christ-centered church, affirms biblical authority, and is able to support the mission and theological commitments of Providence Christian School.

Mission Alignment: Demonstrates an understanding of, or a willingness to grow in, Classical Christian education and its emphasis on formation, virtue, truth, goodness, and beauty.

Musical Literacy: Demonstrates a high level of proficiency in music reading, score study, conducting, rehearsal technique, and instrumental pedagogy.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, Instrumental Music, Music Performance, or a closely related field required; advanced degree preferred.

Teaching Experience: Prior experience teaching instrumental music in a school or comparable educational setting preferred.

Band Experience: Experience directing concert band required; marching band experience strongly preferred.

Instrumental Knowledge: Working knowledge of woodwind, brass, and percussion pedagogy, including the ability to diagnose and remediate fundamental performance problems.

Conducting & Rehearsal Skills: Demonstrated ability to lead efficient, engaging, teacher-directed rehearsals and develop students toward increasing musical independence.

Communication: Strong organizational, interpersonal, and written communication skills with students, parents, colleagues, and administrators.

Professionalism: Demonstrates reliability, humility, teachability, sound judgment, and a willingness to collaborate within established departmental and school structures.

Background Check: Must successfully complete all required Providence Christian School background and employment screening procedures.
